LOCATING AND MAPPING OF UNDERGROUND UTILITIES

Every construction project comes with its own challenges, but the last thing you need is damage to undetected utilities, adding not only significant and unnecessary expense to the process but a risk to public and personnel health and safety.

Our specialist utility locating teams use the latest technology to locate, positively identify and map all underground utilities and service routes including:

  • Gas

  • Water

  • Electricity

  • Fibre Optics

  • Telecom

  • Drainage

  • Sewer

Electro-magnetic locating (EML)

By energising underground utilities with electromagnetic pulses, underground pipes and cables can be accurately located with a handheld receiver. This technology has been developed over many years and can now provide the surveyor with a powerful multi-frequency tool.

Positive Identification

Once EML and GPR scans of the work area are complete and the service routes have been identified, we can then prove the location of the utility by means of potholing or non-destructive digging. Information can then be recorded, detailing the positioning and description of the cable or pipe.

Underground Utility Mapping

Underground Utility Mapping refers to the detection, positioning and identification of buried pipes and cables beneath the ground. It deals with features mainly invisible to the naked eye.

United Utilities will provide a 5.6 - 7.5cm aerial image of the work area resulting in far sharper quality than high-resolution satellite imagery. All the data gained from the initial location will then be added to the aerial imagery detailing a description, depth, and location of all located utility and service routes in the vicinity. It is then possible to integrate the data into leading GIS and CAD platforms. This simple but effective format can be tailored to suit the client’s needs.
